    Storm, high winds batter Clarksville

Repairing a power line severed by flying metal roofing

Clarksville Department of Electricity and Street Department crews are continuing the work of cleaning up and restoring power after a hefty line of storms and high winds swept through Middle Tennessee.

After repairing primary lines and transformers, crews are now working to restore power to individual homes and businesses affected by the storm.  That work should be completed by Friday.

A line of severe weather  slammed into Clarksville Wednesday with a mix of brief but torrential rain and winds in excess of 60 mph, causing widely scattered power outages, downed tree limbs and some structural damage.

In downtown Clarksville, Street Department crews in wet weather gear worked to clear a fallen tree from College Street even as winds continued to howl and rip roofing shingles off the “Biscuit Company” building. Throughout the downtown area smaller branches were riding the winds, and traffic lights and street signs were battered and bent. In some areas, roofing shingles were fluttering like flags and being ripped from rooftops. Several globes on some of the city’s ornate street lamps off College Street were shattered. A stockade fence was partially blown down.  At the Goble Law Firm, awnings on both sides of the building were shredded. «Read the rest of this article»

flywilliamsThe greatest basketball player in Austin Peay State University history finally will have his jersey retired.

The 8 p.m. contest will be televised by ESPNU.

Williams starred at Austin Peay during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons, literally helping put the Governors basketball program on the map. KeyKey

Our family lost a best friend and a hero today.

KeyKey, the rescued Shepherd/Sheltie mix who saved two lives back in August, 2006, died from injuries sustained in an accident.

I’d never been “a dog person,” until I met my daughter Kelly’s dog, KeyKey, a smart, funny, protective  critter who found a second home at my feet, under my desk, on my new sofa, and…well, you get the idea. He wound his way into my heart — a sneak attack of sorts.

One August morning, he woke me from sound sleep, staying by my side as I roused my son-in-law and we three escaped our burning home. This silly wonderful rescued dog had two human rescues to his credit. «Read the rest of this article»

    SRO crowds celebrate President Obama

    January 26, 2009 | Print This Post

silkeSilke’s Old World Breads on College Street was the place to be Saturday night (Jan. 24).

To celebrate the inauguration of President Obama and “change” for America, Silke’s offered an all-you can eat after-hours  buffet, which in tandem with the extensive art on exhibit in this shop, made the $8 per person event a popular choice. The crowds proved it.

Advance tickets were sold, and little more than a half-hour into the event, Silke’s was turning away people (who had not purchased advanced tickets) at the door.

The SRO crowd was vibrant, chatting about the election and taking a “yes we can” attitude toward the new presidential administration.  Around the room, interspersed with works by local artists, were images of the January 20 inauguration. Here are images from this unique event.
