Census Bureau Releases 2009 City Population Estimates

Washington, DC — The U.S. Census Bureau today released July 1st, 2009, population estimates for each of the nation’s incorporated places, including cities, boroughs and villages and minor civil divisions, such as towns and townships. The new estimates are not 2010 Census population counts. They are, however, the last estimates to use 2000 Census results as a base.

The city estimates are based on 2000 Census data updated to reflect legal boundary changes, housing unit estimates updated to reflect inputs such as building permits, and county population estimates. The county population estimates are produced by using administrative records — namely births, deaths, and domestic and international migration. The resulting county population estimates are then distributed to the areas within each county by using the updated housing unit estimates. [Read more]

Justice Assistance Grant Public Comment session

The City of Clarksville and Montgomery County intend to submit a joint application for the 2010 Byrne Justice Assistance with the funds to be shared between the County and the City to be used for traditional law enforcement and crime prevention activities.

Any person wishing to make a comment regarding use of funds is invited to attend a public comment period June 16th, 2010 at 1:30pm.

This session will be held downstairs in the briefing room at The Clarksville Police Department, 135 Commerce St., Clarksville, Tennessee.

Notice of Highway Design Meeting on the widening of SR-149 and SR-13

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will conduct a Highway Design Meeting on June 29th, 2010 in the cafeteria of Cumberland Heights Elementary School, 2093 Ussery Road South, Clarksville, TN to discuss SR-l49 and SR-13 in Montgomery County as shown on the general location map.

The project proposes to widen SR-149 and SR-13 for an approximate distance of 3 miles. Construction along SR-149 will begin approximately 700’ east of River Road and extend to the SR-149/SR-13 intersection. Widening along SR-13 will begin just south of the SR-149/SR-13 intersection and extend to Zinc Plant Road and includes the reconstruction of the SR-13 bridge over the Cumberland River. The proposed typical section for both SR-149 and SR-13 will consist of four 12’ traffic lanes, one 12’ center turn lane, and 10’ shoulders with curb and gutter within a 104’ right-of-way. Language Students Graduate

The Logo of the 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY- Fort Campbell’s Language Training Detachment will host a graduation ceremony for its first 73 students Friday, June 11th at 11:00 am.

The students, members of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) attended Pashto or Dari training since early February.

Dads encouraged to celebrate Father’s Day by quitting tobacco use

Nashville, TN — Father’s Day is a wonderful time for men to celebrate the role they play in influencing the choices children in their lives make. One of these choices is tobacco use.

“This Father’s Day, I urge dads to think about and discuss the effects tobacco may be having on their family,” said Commissioner Susan R. Cooper, MSN, RN. “If they do smoke, fathers can set a good example by either quitting smoking or influencing children to resist the pressures they may face from their peers to use tobacco products.” [Read more]

Teach Tennessee Fellows begin summer training

A chemist, research scientist and physical therapist are among the group of over 25 individuals making a career change this summer to become a teacher through the Tennessee Department of Education’s Teach Tennessee program. Teach Tennessee is a statewide transitional licensure program created by Governor Phil Bredesen that addresses the need for classroom teachers by challenging mid-career professionals, retirees and others to teach.

Twenty-eight “Governor’s Fellows” from 20 Tennessee counties, Alabama and Florida will begin their training this week to earn certification to teach this fall.

“These types of focused, skilled, professional instructors are exactly what we need in the classroom as we move forward with implementation of the STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – initiatives of Race to the Top,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. [Read more]

City of Clarksville to hold information meeting on East/West Corridor

The Clarksville City Council will host a meeting this week regarding the proposed East/West Corridor. The proposed road project would connect Fort Campbell’s Gate 1 to Wilma Rudolph Boulevard, stretch across land between Jack Miller Boulevard and the Hampton Plaza shopping center, and run between 101st Airborne Division Parkway and Tiny Town Road.

The City Council, Regional Planning Commission, Street Department and other City representatives will be there to answer questions, address concerns and hear input from home/land owners who could be affected by the proposal.

The meeting will be held Thursday, June 10th, at 6:00pm at the Kleeman Community Center, 166 Cunningham Lane. This meeting is open to the public. For additional information, call Christie Hill at (931)-648-6128.

Flag Day Retirement Ceremony

The Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization, in conjunction with the Marine Corps League, Detachment 603 and VFW Post 4895, will be conducting the annual Flag Day ceremony beginning at 10:00am, June 14th, at VFW Post 4895, 1701 Haynes St., Clarksville. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony is held to properly destroy—by burning—worn, damaged or otherwise unserviceable American flags in a dignified manner.

Damaged U.S. flags may be dropped off between 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, at the Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization, 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 308, Clarksville, or at the VFW prior to the ceremony.

Montgomery County 911 Center selected as Horizon Award Recipient

The recent installation of a state of the art Next Generation 911 capable Public Safety Answering Point with vendor guarantee to provide the hardware and software necessary to meet the new NG911 standard when adopted at no costs for the next four years, has garnered APCOs prestigious Horizon Award. The system consist of a 16 position PC based PSAP which are all configured identically for cross discipline capability. Additionally, the new PSAP is totally compatible with the computer aided dispatch system including data acquisition, GPS and AVL graphical display. Two parallel positions are provided outside the E911 area, one offsite PSAP/Console position is located at the Sheriff’s Office and another on-site PSAP/Console position is located in the Emergency Operations Center to provide redundancy as well as command and control capabilities. As many Tennessee students head out of school and the Memorial Day weekend approaches, AT&T* has launched a new public service campaign to raise awareness about the risks of texting and driving. Tennessee Attorney General Robert E. Cooper, Metro Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson, Sen. Jim Tracy, and Rep.
