Chris Burawa, director of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, has had several professional developments. He translated from Icelandic a short story by Óskar Magnússon, “Dr. Amplatz,” which will be published in Best European Fiction 2014 by Dalkey Archive Press. [Read more]

APSU journal on Hispanic literature, Polifonía, included in Cervantes Institute’s database

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Earlier this semester, Austin Peay State University’s Department of Languages and Literature released the first print edition of Polifonía, a Spanish language scholarly journal that caters to Hispanic literature.

“The whole intention (of the journal) was to get our name out,” Dr. Osvaldo DiPaolo, APSU assistant professor of Spanish and journal editor, said at the time. “It makes us look better from the outside, and it can bring potential students who are interested.”

Austin Peay State University Spanish language journal now has print edition

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Two years ago, Dr. Osvaldo DiPaolo, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of languages and literature, decided the University needed a Spanish language journal that catered to Hispanic literature.

He thought it would be a hard sell since APSU had a relatively small Spanish program, so he suggested creating an online-only journal to keep costs down.

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Several Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature students were rewarded for their hard work recently when the department presented them with scholarships totaling more than $7,000 for the coming year.

Every spring, the languages and literature department awards the scholarships generously endowed by community members and alumni. Each scholarship has specific criteria for eligibility, set up by the individual who created the scholarship, and a committee within the department then combs through lists of students who meet those requirements. Noted Native American Scholar and Filmmaker to Speak at APSU Asanbe Symposium

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s annual Asanbe Diversity Symposium, slated for next month, will feature Native American educator, writer, filmmaker and producer Dr. Patty Loew.

At 1:00pm on Friday, April 1st, Loew will lecture in the Honors Commons on “Creation to Contemporary Conflict: Native American Origin Stories as Predictors of Modern Environmental Struggles.” At 3:00pm in the same room, there will be a showing of her documentary film, “Way of the Warrior,” followed by a 4:00pm discussion of the film. APSU Professor and Poet Falconer Awarded Prestigious NEA Fellowship

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Blas Falconer, a local poet and an associate professor of English at Austin Peay State University, has been awarded a prestigious creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts.

His work was selected from among 1,063 applicants as deserving of the honor, which brings with it an award of $25,000. The NEA’s creative writing fellowships are meant to encourage the production of new works of literature by providing writers with the time and financial support to write. [Read more]
