Clarksville, TN – As expected, U.S. financial market participants kept a close eye on developments in Europe. A fragile ceasefire agreement was reached in Ukraine (but we’ve seen that before). Negotiations to reduce austerity in Greece and restructure the country’s debt broke down without making much progress, but the two sides agreed to try again next week.
Retails sales were softer than expected in January and consumer sentiment fell unexpectedly in the mid-February assessment, leading to some concerns about the strength of consumer spending, but also fueling expectations that the Fed will delay its initial increase in short-term interest rates. Unadjusted core retail sales fell 24.9%, the same decline as in January 2014.

Clarksville, TN – The January Employment Report was strong. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 257,000 (median forecast: +235,000), with a net upward revision of +147,000 to the two previous months (three month average at +336,000). Payrolls fell by 2.76 million before seasonal adjustment, but were up 3.21 million from a year earlier.
The unemployment rate edged up to 5.7% (from 5.6%) reflecting noise in the labor force participation figure (down in December, up in January). The employment/population ratio edged higher. Average hourly earnings jumped 0.5%, following a 0.2% decline in December (up 2.2% y/y, still a relatively lackluster trend).

Clarksville, TN – As expected, Greece’s election resulted in a turn to the left. The new leadership indicated that it intends to remain in the euro, but will seek a reduction in austerity and some restructuring of the country’s debt.
That sets up a conflict with other European countries that oppose such moves. This will likely take some time to resolve, with headlines expected to add to global financial market volatility in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, euro area inflation fell to -0.6% y/y.
Real GDP rose at a 2.6% annual rate in the advance estimate for 4Q14 (vs. a median forecast of +3.1%), but it was still a good report. As expected, it was a strong quarter for consumer spending (+4.3%), but a relatively soft quarter for business fixed investment (+1.9%).

Austin Peay State University ROTC cadets train abroad as part of Army CULP program

Clarksville, TN – Two Austin Peay State University ROTC cadets traveled abroad this summer to immerse themselves in different cultures and train with foreign militaries.
Ryan Lipinski, an APSU junior, spent a month in Bulgaria while Joshua Pollina, an APSU junior, traveled to a warmer climate in Greece.

Gets Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Two Bronze Medals
Nashville, TN – Tennessee just made global news for its award winning wines.
Tennessee wineries took home 21 medals from the recent Indy International Wine Competition at Purdue University, one of the nation’s largest wine competitions.
The West Lafayette, Indiana event attracted more than 2,300 wines from 39 states and 14 countries as far away as France, Australia, Chile and Greece. The wines were judged by 44 international experts in a completely blind taste competition based on appearance, aroma, taste and aftertaste.

USS LST 325 docks in Clarkville at McGregor Park Boat Ramp

Clarksville, TN – This afternoon, September 25th, the USS LST 325 made it’s way down the Cumberland River from Nashville and docked at the McGregor Park Boat Ramp around 3:00pm. Crews began tying the boat off to the banks and preparing it for tomorrows tours. The ship will be available for tours September 26th-30th.
The LST (Landing Ship, Tank) is a floating monument to the past. The ship was used in various missions in World War II including the invasion of Sicily. Visitors are able to climb aboard and explore the ship as the crew provides a glimpse into her past.

APSU student to help excavate ancient Greek town this summer

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Miraldi, a junior classics major at Austin Peay State University, unfolded a large map and spread it over the desk of Dr. Tim Winters, APSU professor of classics, covering up his coffee mugs and a worn, paperback copy of Euripides’ plays.
“The site is called Gournia,” Miraldi said, leaning over the map and pointing at a small dot on the Greek island of Crete. It didn’t look like much on the crinkled paper, but in actuality Gournia is a stunningly beautiful archeological site, with ancient stone walls surrounded by lush green hills and the deep blue of the Cretan Sea.

New study abroad courses to take APSU students to London for a week

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Daniel Shea, Austin Peay State University associate professor of languages and literature, leaned back in his chair and said, “We’ve got lots of programs for people who can spend considerable amounts of time abroad. If you want to study abroad for a year or a semester or a month, we’ve got you covered.”
Outside his office window in Harned Hall, dozens of nontraditional students walked across campus. They’re the type of students – parents, full-time employees and military veterans – who don’t necessarily have the time or money to spend weeks studying in a foreign country. [Read more]
