APSU art students earn several awards and scholarships

Clarksville, TN – February turned out to be a good month for the Austin Peay State University Department of Art, with several students earning prestigious awards and scholarships.
Graphic design student Brooke Mckee was awarded a Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) scholarship for winning a Design Center student competition to design the visual identity for TBR’s Critical Conversations Initiative. [Read more]
APSU Provost Lecture Series: Photography professor Susan Bryant to present October 3rd

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University photography professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.
Susan Bryant, APSU professor of photography, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, October 3rd, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. She will discuss and provide a brief history of the of the 19th century photography method known as the wet plate collodion process.
APSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with “Migration is Beautiful” series

Clarksville, TN – Visual artist Favianna Rodriguez will visit Austin Peay State University this October and provide a presentation and poster design workshop as part of programming for Hispanic Heritage Month.
In preparation for her visit, students created several eye-catching posters that incorporated Rodriguez’s artwork. Students in APSU associate professor of art Mark DeYoung’s class, Design Center, created 19 posters.
APSU Provost Lecture Series: Art professor Jones to present Common Hope on September 26th

Barry Jones, interim chair of the APSU Department of Art, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, September 26th, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. His lecture will be about the “Common Hope” community art project he developed this year.

15 APSU Faculty members chosen as Summer Research Fellows

Clarksville, TN – Fifteen faculty members at Austin Peay State University have been chosen as awardees in the Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP), an initiative to encourage the development of research/creative activity projects at the University.
The SRFP awards up to $5,000 for selected proposals by tenured or tenure-track faculty to develop a research or creative activity project that should place them in a better position to seek external funding.

Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to showcase design work

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University art professor will present recent design work created through a sustainable, responsible production practice as part of APSU’s next Provost Lecture Series.
Mark DeYoung, assistant professor of art, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 5th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The event is free and open to the public.
His discussion will revolve around the idea that by extending designer involvement through the production of the designed work, the period of creative potential is extended. [Read more]
Rivers and Spires Festival announces 2013 Poster Contest Winner

Clarksville, TN – The Rivers and Spires Festival is pleased to announce Austin Peay State University Junior, Lucas Freeze as the winner of the 2013 Festival Poster Design project.
Freeze was a part of a class project, through the APSU Design Center, that came up with several comps of artwork for the 2013 Festival poster.

Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to examine Medieval Hungary

Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to discuss Earth’s atmosphere as a nuisance in astronomy

Clarksville, TN – The Earth’s atmosphere, though necessary to support life, is a major nuisance to accurate astronomical work. Instrumentation has improved over the past few decades to a point that the time-tested techniques to account for the effects of the atmosphere on astronomical data are no longer sufficient.
“With major new astronomical surveys beginning, advances in the techniques to account for the atmosphere are needed,” said Dr. J. Allyn Smith, associate professor of physics and astronomy. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University Design Center Students Present 2013 Rivers & Spires Poster Concepts tonight

Clarksville, TN – Tonight, February 20th at 7:00pm, students in this semester’s Design Center class at Austin Peay State University will be presenting their concepts for the 2013 Rivers & Spires Festival poster at a reception held in the Trahern Building Gallery. The public is welcome to attend the event.
The class, under the direction of Assistant Professor Mark DeYoung, began working on the project in January. Representatives from the Festival met with the students and presented the ideas and look they wanted captured in the final piece of artwork. [Read more]
