Hypocrisy explored in new Austin Peay Downtown Gallery Exhibit

Austin Peay Downtown Art Gallery The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery will present a new exhibit, “Seriously (WTF)” by Donna Stack (’96), from August 5th-28th, 2010, with an opening reception from 5:00pm-8:00pm, August 5th.

Stack will present a selection of video and installation works that explores her ongoing investigation into issues of identity, femininity and authenticity, with a selective ambit into how hypocrisy functions within these realms.

Stack received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida in 2002 and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Austin Peay State University in 1996. She is an interdisciplinary artist with an emphasis in installation, video and performance.

Jammin’ in the Alley Concert to feature Tina Brown- Friday, July 16th

Jammin' In the AlleyThe City of Clarksville together with U.S. Bank will soon be Jammin’ in Strawberry Alley once more. Join us on Friday, July 16th for Jammin’ in the Alley’s third year in downtown Clarksville.

This month’s free concert features the Tina Brown. This New York native has quickly become a Clarksville favorite performing at various events around town, to include our recent July 3rd Celebration at McGregor Park. Tina Brown has also performed all over the mid-South to include blues festivals, on Beale Street, and has even opened for Earth, Wind, & Fire and Gladys Knight in Europe! [Read more]

Come downtown to Porkin in the Park this Friday and Saturday

Porkin in the ParkThe 3rd annual Porkin in the Park is Friday and Saturday, July 9th and 10th at Strawberry alley. Downtown Clarksville will be filled with the smell of slow hickory smoked barbeque and the sounds of live music. Clarksville Kiwanis Club is hosting its third annual Kansas City Barbeque Society’s Porkin in the Park State Championship Contest presented by Bud Light. Teams from all over the eastern United States will be competing for $6,500 in prize money in five categories, chicken, pulled pork bbq, brisket, ribs, and dessert. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of championship barbeque for sale so come hungry.

The event is free and open to the public. In addition to the food, there’s live music both nights beginning at 6:00pm. Mike Robinson will kick things off Friday followed by Les Kerr and the Bayou Band. Saturday night Southern Comfort will open for The Beagles. There’s a kid’s zone both days for the little ones with inflatables.

3rd Annual Porkin’ in the Park, July 9th and 10th

The Kiwanis Club of Clarksville presents the 3nd annual Porkin’ in the Park. The event will be held down on Strawberry Alley July 9th and 10th. There will be food, drinks, live music and so much more. And let’s not forget the Barbeque. Admission is FREE to the public for both days.

Porkin’ in the Park is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned state championship barbeque cook-off hosted by Kiwanis Club of Clarksville. BBQ teams from around the region will be there competing for a Grand Champion prize of $1000. Prizes are also awarded to the top ten entries in each category – Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork and Brisket. Pools Now Open- NEW Swim Classes Available. The first session of swim classes began, June 14th.

This year we are offering Senior Splash which consists of a 45 minute workout for those ages 50 and up. This class combines gentle, yet effective aerobic exercises to help tone and strengthen muscles. Basic Water Aerobics is also available for anyone ages 18 and up. This 45 minute class is aimed at improving tone, strength and mobility.

Get your child accustomed to the water at an early age with our Mommy/Daddy and Me class. Recommended for children 6-36 months. [Read more]

Rivers and Spires promises a full weekend of fun!

The Rivers and Spires FestivalIt is spring time again, and April is upon us. That means one thing, Rivers and Spires is just around the corner! The free three day festival will be held on April 15th-17th. It brings people from across the country to Historic Downtown Clarksville to enjoy some of the best entertainment, unique arts & crafts, and the distinctive culture our city has to offer.

The festival this year promises to be bigger and better than ever! With many new events, big name performers, and three days of non-stop fun, there is something for everyone!

In 2009, more than 35,000 people filled the streets of Clarksville for the free 3-day event.

First Thursday Art Walk

You’re invited to join the merchants of Historic Downtown Clarksville for The monthly Art Walk, on April 1st from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Kendall Welsh from ARTifacts sent us this information about April’s artistic extravaganza.

Four diverse young artists will bringing their work to the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery in April for a month-long group exhibit. The show, which will feature APSU art alumni Janelle Costello, Caroline Tuzeneu, Sam Matthews and William Arnett Gentry, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 1, and it will run through May 1.

The show will feature startlingly original work, such as Costello’s diorama-like photography collages that depict surreal scenes of imagined narratives.

“The intent of this body of work is to invite the viewer to temporarily escape the mundane by accentuating the beauty of make-believe,” she said. [Read more]

Strawberry Alley will be closed to through traffic in front of City Hall starting at 1 p.m. on the day of the event. US Bank’s drive-through and City Hall parking lots will be accessible.

Jammin’ in Alley Friday Night

downtown-logo-133x200The July installment of this year’s Jammin’ in the Alley concert series will take place Friday, July 17, on Strawberry Alley in downtown Clarksville.

Beginning this month, concerts start at 7:00 p.m.  Starting closer to sundown and escaping the daytime heat should allow for a more enjoyable evening.

This month’s free concert features Chris Robertson and The Country Music Band.  The group is sure to keep concert goers on their feet with their renditions of classic country favorites and band originals inspired by the likes of country legends like Merle Haggard. 

As always, downtown restaurants will offer outdoor dining to Jammin’ in the Alley patrons.  So, don’t worry about making time for dinner before the show.  Grab a seat and a bite to eat while enjoying live music.

Downtown Art Walk on Thursday July 2nd

Historic Downtown Clarksville TennesseeYou’re invited to join the merchants of Historic Downtown Clarksville for The monthly Art Walk, on July 2nd from 5 – 8 p.m. Paige King from Hodgepodge sent us this information about July’s artistic extravaganza.

Visions Metaphysical Boutique will host Deborah Raleigh-Chandler, oils–impressionistic, still life; Afton Chandler, acrylics–modern, impressionistic; Amanda Harrison, acrylics–modern, impressionistic (some new pieces); Linda Cain, handcrafted sterling silver & gemstone jewelry (some new pieces).

The Roxy Regional Theatre–Clarksville’s Center for Arts and Education, will host the work of Beverly Parker Riggins in the Peg Harvill Gallery. The subject matter includes architecture from historic downtown Clarksville. They are large digital prints from manipulated polaroid transfer images. For the performing arts, enjoy Disney’s Mulan, Jr. playing at 6pm and tickets for the hit musical RENT will be on sale in the lobby. [Read more]
