Liberty Park Boat Ramp final preparations

Liberty Park - Clarksville MarinaClarksville, TN – As opening day for the Liberty Park boat ramp and boat docks grows near, TMS Contracting employees and City employees were hard at work Thursday, May 26th with final preparations.

Around 1:00pm, TMS Contracting, launched a Crestliner pontoon boat on loan from Bill Roberts Thunder Road Marine (located at 1018 South Riverside Drive), to do some work on the Marina Basin. This makes the Crestliner the first boat launched from the Liberty Park boat ramp.

Tennessee Outdoors Youth Summit application deadline extended

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The application deadline has been extended until May 7th, 2010 for the Tennessee Outdoors Youth Summit (TOYS), June 13th-18th. TOYS is for high school students from across Tennessee and will be hosted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Students will be introduced to many outdoor activities at the event to be held at TWRA’s complex in Montgomery County. Among the activities that the students will become acquainted with will include boating, hunting, trapping, archery, photography, marksmanship, plant identification, forestry, camping, water quality, trap shooting, skeet shooting, wildlife identification, and several classes with wildlife and fishery biology as the topic. Deer Archery Hunters see increase in opening weekend Harvest

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Tennessee’s deer archery hunters saw an increase in their harvest from 2009 on the opening weekend of the 2010 season. A total of 2,401 deer were taken, an increase of 163, with all 95 counties reporting harvests.

Montgomery County led the opening weekend (September 25th-26th) totals with 75 harvests, edging the 2009 leader, Giles County’s reporting total of 72.

Other top county totals were Stewart 68, Roane 61, Henry 59, Smith 55, Maury 50, Jackson 49, Sumner 48, Hardeman and Hamilton 46, Carter and Wilson 45. [Read more]

Riverfest was truly bigger and better than ever!

Riverfest 2010It’s been several days after the end of the 2010 Riverfest Celebration, and for those who worked the two day festival, life is returning to normal. The hard working folks with the Clarksville Department of Parks & Recreation along the entertainers, and hundreds of volunteers ensured that the visitors could simply enjoy some good wholesome family fun.

This was the first year that Clarksville Online and Discover Clarksville was selected to document the festival as much as was humanly possible. Roland Woodworth, Ashley and Meghan Hamilton, and Bill Larson were given the job of photographing everything in the tiniest of detail, while Mark Haynes shot hours and hours of raw video footage, and Sue Culverhouse took it all in to get material for her wonderful articles!

TVA Police urge reservoir users to play safely

May 27, 2010

KNOXVILLE, TN — With the start of the traditional summer recreation season this Memorial Day weekend, Tennessee Valley Authority Police are urging the public to use caution and common sense around the water. In 2009, 27 people drowned in TVA reservoirs.

“Most of the drowning deaths we investigate can be prevented if people simply wear a personal floatation device and avoid using alcohol or drugs around the water,” said Raymond Jordan, TVA Police field operations commander. “It’s a tragedy every time a life is lost, but it’s even worse when many of these accidents didn’t have to happen.”

Two-thirds of all boating accidents and half of all boating fatalities involve alcohol. [Read more]
