APSU History Honor Students Create New Scholarly Journal

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Montgomery didn’t get much sleep this past semester. Aside from the normal stresses of a graduating college senior, the Austin Peay State University history student was plagued with images of misspelled words and incorrectly used commas during many sleepless nights. When she thought about scholarly citations and the proper use of the Chicago Manual of Style, she nearly went into a panic.
That’s because Montgomery, a member of the University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society, took on an enormous responsibility during her final semester at APSU. She was appointed to serve as the editor-in-chief of the first scholarly history journal in Austin Peay’s history.

APSU’s new course suggestion tool gains national spotlight in higher education

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has gained national attention in the higher education circle with the launch of its new Course Recommendation System, which helps to pair a student with courses that best fit his/her talents and program of study.
The Chronicle of Higher Education, a Washington, D.C.-based weekly publication of news and information for college and university faculty members and administrators, featured APSU’s new tool in its April 10th, 2011 issue. Clarksville, TN – If you’ve been online lately, then perhaps you have bought a book recommended to you by Amazon, watched a movie that Netflix suggested that you would enjoy or listened to music selected for you by Pandora.

Dr. Trahern Receives TBR Philanthropy Award Because of Generosity to APSU

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Joseph B. Trahern Jr. was presented the 2011 Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in Philanthropy during the 53rd Annual Tower Club Dinner meeting at Austin Peay State University, held April 1st.
APSU President Tim Hall, who nominated Trahern for the award, said, “Though Dr. Trahern never taught at APSU, our institution has been fortunate enough to be the recipient of his extreme generosity. As a native of Clarksville, he understands the important role APSU plays in this community.”

Clarksville Leaders make Nashville Post’s “In Charge” List

Nashville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan is among a handful of local people who made the Nashville Post’s “In Charge” list of Middle Tennessee’s business and political “power brokers.”
This is the second year the prominent Music City business publication has recognized those in the Nashville area who have “the ability to use a position to create opportunity for others … in business, government or on broader civic issues,” according to the magazine’s March/April issue. The list was broken into various categories such as Banking & Finance, Education, and Government/Politics, in addition to Media, Music, Sports and Technology. [Read more]
APSU Assistant VP of academic affairs chosen as TBR Maxine Smith Fellow

Clarksville, TN – After being nominated by the top two administrators at Austin Peay State University, the assistant vice president of academic affairs at APSU has been selected by the Tennessee Board of Regents as a Maxine Smith Fellow.
Dr. Brian Johnson will split his work duties between APSU and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) in Nashville, where he will work under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Rhoda, executive director of the THEC. Johnson, whose project will focus on the Complete College Tennessee Act, was nominated by APSU President Tim Hall and Dr. Tristan Denley, provost and vice president of academic affairs. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University cuts the ribbon on the Hemlock Semiconductor Building

Austin Peay State University held a ribbon cutting for its new Chemical Engineering Technology Facility yesterday. The facility which has been designated the Hemlock Semiconductor Building will train Austin Peay Students to fill the skilled labor needs for the new Polysilicon plant being built in North Clarksville. The ribbon cutting was attended by area dignitaries along with HSC officials, and was open to the general public.

APSU president to kick off APSU’s 3rd annual Library Athenaeum

Tim Hall, president of Austin Peay State University, will kick off the 2010-11 Library Athenaeum program.
The series will begin at 1:00pm, Wednesday, September 15th in Woodward Library. Hall will present “Fractured Souls: Lawyers’ Roles and Ethics,” discussing the reality that lawyers are sometimes called upon to do things in the representation of clients they would not do in their individual capacities.
In his talk, Hall will investigate the question of whether it is reasonable to think of ethics in terms of the professional role one occupies.
Students are encouraged to attend; the event is free and open to the public. [Read more]
APSU to celebrate new Hemlock Semiconductor Building with grand opening

A year after breaking ground, Austin Peay State University will celebrate the grand opening of the new Hemlock Semiconductor Building at noon, Thursday, September 16th.
The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and name dedication ceremony at the new facility, located at the intersection of College and Eighth streets. The Hemlock Semiconductor Building houses the chemical engineering technology (CET) associate degree program and laboratory. [Read more]
APSU iPhone app now available on iTunes

Austin Peay State University launched its own iPhone app August 25th. The app is available as a free download through the iTunes Store, operated by Apple – the manufacturer of the iPhone, iPad and other Mac computer products.
The APSU iPhone app has eight features for users:
- A blog by APSU President Tim Hall.
- Google map of the main campus.
- APSU news.
- Sports news.
- Event calendar.
- Faculty and staff directory.
- Course catalog.
- My Schedule, allowing students to see their class meetings.
